Of course, no one actually lives in these PODS – at least, as far as I know! One thing is for sure – these are not my PODS! However, they do teach a powerful lesson, no matter who lives where or for how long. The truth is, no matter the size, shape, or age of my lodging or yours, you and I live in temporary housing.
My wife and I were out for our daily walk recently, and we noticed that some people in our neighborhood were loading up these two PODS. They’re smart. These PODS provide a very efficient way to relocate. People can rent these and take their own time packing them as they wish. Then the PODS company transports these containers to the customers’ new address, where the owners can unload them on their own schedule.
I couldn’t resist taking some photos. I also couldn’t resist doctoring the image you see above. I asked AI to put regular house-type shingle roofs on these PODS to highlight my point.
Life on this earth bears the illusion of permanence. When we move into a new home, we may sign a lease or commit to a mortgage. We may assume that we will be at that address through the end of the lease or the completion of the mortgage. With that in mind, we may add new furnishings, make major renovations, and settle in “for the long haul.” That’s fine, but one’s current home, even a retirement home, is only here for a relatively short time.
To some people, bigger, newer, and brighter may seem better and more likely to last. With a solid foundation and top-quality materials, expectations may be as high as the monthly payments.
Intellectually, we know that nothing here lasts forever. It won’t be long for any of us until we don’t have any address on this planet. And yet, the appearance of durability and longevity can encourage us to feel that this life is going to continue a long time.
Via the news we see and hear how quickly earthquakes, fires, floods, lightning, and wars can destroy homes. Yet it’s easy to think that such things happen to other people in faraway places. We just suppose that our own home will still be standing each time that we return to it. And hopefully for a while it will!
So, rent that apartment. Buy that house. Get something nicer or more suitable to your family and your stage of life. After all, the Lord knows that we need a place to land and live for now and the immediate future.
But remember:
You and I live in temporary housing.
Plan today, and every day, for your long-term move.
The Bible calls it the “long home” (KJV) or the “eternal home” in Ecclesiastes 12:5.
Abraham and the other patriarchs had it right.
Heb 11:9 By faith [Abraham] lived as an alien in the land of promise, as in a foreign land, dwelling in tents with Isaac and Jacob, fellow heirs of the same promise; 10 for he was looking for the city which has foundations, whose architect and builder is God.
Heb 11:13 All these died in faith, without receiving the promises, but having seen them and having welcomed them from a distance, and having confessed that they were strangers and exiles on the earth. 14 For those who say such things make it clear that they are seeking a country of their own. 15 And indeed if they had been thinking of that country from which they went out, they would have had opportunity to return. 16 But as it is, they desire a better country, that is, a heavenly one. Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God; for He has prepared a city for them.
As Paul wrote by inspiration:
2 Cor 5:1 For we know that if the earthly tent which is our house is torn down, we have a building from God, a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens. 2 For indeed in this house we groan, longing to be clothed with our dwelling from heaven, 3 inasmuch as we, having put it on, will not be found naked. 4 For indeed while we are in this tent, we groan, being burdened, because we do not want to be unclothed but to be clothed, so that what is mortal will be swallowed up by life.
In a similar way, Peter noted:
2 Pet 3:10 But the day of the Lord will come like a thief, in which the heavens will pass away with a roar and the elements will be destroyed with intense heat, and the earth and its works will be burned up. 11 Since all these things are to be destroyed in this way, what sort of people ought you to be in holy conduct and godliness, 12 looking for and hastening the coming of the day of God, because of which the heavens will be destroyed by burning, and the elements will melt with intense heat! 13 But according to His promise we are looking for new heavens and a new earth, in which righteousness dwells.
